Receivers didn't always have 20-30 dB excess gain like they do now, so it was worthwhile to use a receiving antenna tuner/preamp, especially if their 6K8 front end was noisy. 
Now I have a good example of the much sought after 92101 preamp, with 10m (27-32MHz) plug in coil unit.  46910 
Not only that, I have the really rare and very useful 20m (13-15 MHz) plug in! 46920
