Has it been a year already? JMS members, W1HRX will again be one of the
Flagship Stations in this years Antique Wireless Associations AM QSO
Party. This year Jim Hanlon W8KGI will be the operator for our club
call out of his Sandia Park, NM shack. Jim ran W1HRX in the 2007 and
2009 AM QSO Parties and has offered to put some of vintage AM equipment
on again this year, including his very nice Millen-era National NTX-30
transmitter.
As in prior years W2AN at the AWA Museum will be the other station. My
latest issue of the AWA Journal just arrived today and I see the old
W1HRX AM transmitter has been moved out of the old annex location. I
sure hope they have it ready to go for this years event. W2AN was a
power house signal on the band during this event and I'm not sure they
have anything with as much presence over in East Bloomfield to match it.
Here are the specifics from the AWA website on the event:
EVENT: 2011 AWA Amplitude Modulation QSO Party
DATES: Sat. Feb. 19 @ 2300 GMT to Sun. Feb. 20 @ 2300 GMT
Bands: 80, 40 and 20 Meters
Special Conditions: AM is required. All ages of equipment and all power
levels. Extra credit for working one or more Flagship Stations,
typically W2AN (James Millen's personal xmtr.) and W1HRX (Millen's
personal call). Logs due four weeks after event.
The latest journal has detailed information on the contest and all
exchange information. Unfortunately, the details on this event do not
yet appear on the AWA website. The event is very informal and open to
all amateurs. So get on even if you have limited time that weekend and
see if you can work W2AN and Jim with W1HRX. Jim will also be able to
QSL with our own vintage looking (modeled after James Millen's 1930's
QSL) card. If you do work him send along an SASE with your card.
A message to JMS members: W1HRX is licensed to The James Millen Society
and the call is available for other operating events. Although we would
prefer events that are "historical" in flavor. I'm afraid using W1HRX
in the ARRL's November Sweepstakes would not bring much recognition
toward it's original ownership and origin, hi. If you have any desire
to put W1HRX on-the-air for other events let me know and we will try to
accommodate.
73 and see you a couple of weekends from now on AM.
