Hi Watt and all JMS Members,

Your birth date jives with the previous data that Joe found. So born 11
July 1904 and died on 8 June 1987 would make him 82 years old or one
month short of his 83rd birthday. That agrees with the obit. So I
think we now have the important dates! Congrats! That means our 100th
Anniversary Celebration W1HRX operation in 2001 was three years early -
oh well..... Hey we're only a couple years away from the 70th
Anniversary of the companies founding so it may be time to start
thinking of a new celebration.

So now it remains to be seen if we can find out additional family ties
that may come from his brothers and their families which may be
traceable today. Thus offering us the potential of discovering more
about the early years of Jim's life. I know some things about my uncles
early years via stories my dad used to tell me. So if there are any
children of Robert Millen's family out there they may have stories to
tell us about their uncle James. Who knows this could lead to a short
article for the JMS website on "James Millen the Early Years". FYI,
James Millen doesn't have a middle name. His brother is Robert S.
Millen and along with his mother are listed as officers of The James
Millen Company in the Dun & Bradstreet reports from the late 40's and
early 50's. Albeit they were also listed as "Not Being Active in the
Business"! Most likely this fact relates more toward company ownership
if James had met with an early demise.

Here is a tidbit from 1950 that you may find interesting. James Millen
was paid a salary of $25,000 in 1950. That's equivalent to a little
over $200,000 in todays dollars. His top management and engineering
people earned about 1/5th that amount. You can get some idea of who his
top people were by reading many of the personal writings from prior
employees on our JMS webpage. I'm sure many are aware of "Miss" Bearse
as she pretty much ran the day-to-day business operations at Millen. It
was interesting to see that she actually made just about as much money
as the chief executives or engineers by the fact she often received
Christmas bonuses that essentially doubled her base pay each year.
Perhaps this was an early means that James had to correct the pay
differentials between male and female pay rates we still read about today.
