Dear Scott: Thank you for your very interesting report. I would like to
attend the AWA conference in the future and visit the museum. About 12 years
ago I acquired a 1946 HRO-5TA1 with the four coils, "dog house" power supply
and have added all of the additional coil sets that were optional. I found it
at a ham fest in North Carolina. It was in pretty sad condition, being stored
in a barn many years. A close friend restored it. He replaced all of the old
paper capacitors and fixed resistors with modern types(Cornell-Dubilier &
Allan Bradley) and a lot of other items were repaired/replaced. I want my
radio's to work when turned-on; not smoke.) There was a good article by K2BN
on restoring the HRO's in the AWA Old Timers Bulletin for August, 1991, p.44.
Needless to say, HRO's are prized items and it is difficult to find one in
unmodified condition.
Question: Tell us more details of the telegraph key used by "The Old Man"
himself, Hiram Percy Maxim. I really would like to know all of the details of
his key! Thank's again and 73. - watt
