Don,

I haven't heard as many hetrodynes in one place since I used to work my
brother Bob, W4RXK, at the Ohio State station, W8LT, from home in Fort
Thomas, Kentucky as W4VIV. That was on 3850 and circa 1954 through 1956.

Jim, W8KGI

Subject: [JMS] Honor to have the W1HRX QSL

Well all, I just received my confirmation QSL card yesterday from the
W1HRX AWA AM QSO Party contact. Thanks Jim. It will find a treasured
place on the QSL wall of fame!

Those of you who were not able to get on for the event you sure missed a
great chance to hear some quality AM rigs. From memory I talked to or
heard the following JMS members over the weekend, WA4IAM, K2MP (at
W2AN), WA9WFA, W2DGB (in a round table), K5RB, W8KGI (at W1HRX) and
W0YVA. Whom did I miss or forget? The JMS members list is growing so I
find I need to consult my online roster. This has prompted me to find a
computer logging program that would notify me of JMS status when I work
you. It will probably take me a year to figure out how to use it, hi.
I also worked several stations using new technology radios which sounded
quite nice. Especially those new FLEXRADIOS which are all computer
based from the IF on down.

During the first hour I was able to sit in on a round table on 80 meters
that reached all the way down to Gray's (WA4IAM)in North Carolina. We
were both running our wee power Millen setups and had no problems
copying each other. Several of the stations in the round table were
just amazed how nice those little Millen stations sounded with their 30
watts of carrier power. It's so easy to modulate 100% when using two
6146's to drive a single 6146. This year I used the Millen only on 80
meters and the Johnson Valiant on 20 and 40. Hopefully next year I will
be able to complete the BIG Millen rack with the 90881 amplifier and the
811 modulators. The intention is to keep as much Millen in the rack as
possible. Thus driving the 811 pair from the current 90831 modulator.
I know sveral of you plan similar setups. Who will be the first with a
high power high level modulation Millen setup?

I would like to take this opportunity to thank Jim W8KGI and Doc K7SO
for doing a bang up job with the W1HRX station in New Mexico. This was
a real boost for the JMS organization. Also a big thanks to Gary WA4IAM
and Ed K2MP who are the AWA QSO Party organizers. Gary the flagship
stations seem to have hit the nail on the head for getting people on the
air for these events. To work W2AN and W1HRX made my weekend. The
prior week was the Classic Radio Exchange (CX). I heard little activity
here in the midwest during that weekend from the AM guys. I don't think
there was a minute during the whole AWA Party that I didn't hear an AM
station on one of the bands. I can't wait to hear what you drum up for
next year.

Jim and Doc I hope you took some pictures and can write up a bit for the
JMS website. Hope to see stuff in the AWA Journal and Electric Radio
magazine as well.

With my appreciation es 73

Don N9OO
