Wowee wow wow. That was the most well attended and enthusiastic AM event I've ever heard!!! I worked 75 meter AM Saturday night, and found band conditions to be fair to good, signals up and down the band. For Saturday I used the Viking Valiant and NC-300, with the 160 meter inverted vee. I joined in the pile up for W2AN and worked for maybe 1/2 to 45 minutes before getting through. Excellent!! It was a special treat working W2AN because they were using James Millens homebrew transmitter and personal HRO receiver. I had several contacts plus joined in a large roundtable and hooked up with old friends and made new friends.
Later I QSO'd Don N9OO who was running his pipsqueek 30 watt Millen setup. Sounded good up in Saint Paul. I also hooked up with Gary WA4IAM and I think he was running his Millen station as well!
Sunday I got on 20 meter AM for several hours and worked several more AM stations. For Sunday I switched receivers to the 75A-4 because I wanted to use the passband tuning when things got tough. It was interesting because at first there wasn't much activity, a station or two, within an hour or two it was jammed from 14275 to 14290, then it petered out :-> Probably just following propagation I suppose. It was fun to hear all the AM stations on 20 meters as there isn't much AM going on there normally.
I was working guys, then moving around the frequency hoping to find W1HRX. I didn't hear him Saturday night, and by Sunday afternoon I thought my chances of snagging him had passed. I was hoping to get one of those special event W1HRX QSL cards. I was saying 73's to a station, telling him I was going to hunt around for W1HRX, that I haven't heard him, that I"m running out of time, yada yada yada. I let up on the PTT and there is W1HRX calling me. Wow, talk about 'out of the blue'. It was nice meeting Jim for the first time and it was nice contacting the W1HRX flagship station. Grandslam! UH HUH! UH HUH! :->
Thanks Gary, Dave, Ed, Jim and others for this great time!
I don't want to spread rumors but I happen to know someone very close to me, if not me, ok its me, who just bought a gorgous National NC-101X with matching speaker!! I'm hoping that will make for some fine 1930's QSO's.
73, Scott WA9WFA
