To All Kentucky Amateurs,

Morehead State University will be launching a near-space balloon at 10
a.m. Tuesday, June 21 from the Bluegrass region of Kentucky. The launch
will be dependent on favorable weather conditions. The purpose of the
launch is for student experiments, research and professional development
for instructors.

Among the payloads the balloon will be carrying a UHF simplex repeater,
as well as APRS. The simplex repeater will be operational on 446.300
using a CTCSS tone of 100 Hz. next week. APRS will also be used on
144.39 MHz and can also be tracked on the aprs.fi website
(http://aprs.fi <http://aprs.fi/>).

Signal reports will be greatly appreciated with your call, signal
strength, location and if possible, a magnetic bearing to the
transmitter. When using the simplex repeater, remember to allow time for
it to record your signal and retransmit it.

It's a very interesting experiment to follow. My son Elijah, KJ4FZX and
others at the Ashland, Ky., hamfest were able to make contacts via the
simplex repeater during a balloon launch earlier this year with hams at
the Owenton, Ky. launch site -- using a dualband HT and a UHF handheld
yagi antenna.

Updates on the launch will follow via KYHAM. If weather conditions are
unfavorable the launch may be delayed, rescheduled or canceled.

73,

Jim Brooks, KY4Z
ARRL Kentucky Section Manager
