Hi Jerry,

Ahhh, good point.

Thanks for posting this.

I was schooled & learned something before I got into trouble because I didn't know the rules about IDing.

I would have been in violation of the rules & regulations had I not read this & put up a beacon &/or a repeater & programed the iders for them.

Ass/u/me!

Be safe, read the rules & regulations too make sure that you are compliant.

NO GUESSING!

Just because others are doing it, does not mean it is right, legal, correct or whatever.

Thanks.

In the Spring 2011 edition of the QCWA Journal a question appeared:

Q:   " Just answer yes or no the question of whether it is OK to /B for a beacon station ID, because "B" is supposedly a prefix assigned to another country. While the entire BAA-BZZ block is assigned to China, I don't believe a single "B" is used in Chinese amateur station identification."

A:    " No. Not by station transmitting from places where the amateur service is regulated by the FCC, anyway. Whether or not the foreign country does or does not make use of its ITU-assigned block is beside the point. Use of the letter "B" is the People's Republic Of China's prerogative, that being its nationality identification. The use B for a self-assigned identifier, therefore, would not be compliant with Section 97:119(c) which says that no self-assigned indication may conflict with any other prefix assigned to another country.

I.T.U. Artical 19.50 says that for call signs beginning with B, F, G, I, K, M, N, R, W and Z, only the first character is required for nationality identification. For a more comprehensive discussion, see BE informed No. 52 including a Self-Assigned Indicator.".

So, it would seem that many U.S. beacon and repeater station are non-compliant if I ead this right.
