The Southeast Louisiana Amateur Radio Club (SELARC) will be operating a special event station at the Ponchatoula Community Center on Saturday, August 29, 2009, the anniversary of Hurricane Katrina. In commemoration of the tragic events and landfall of these two terrible hurricanes, Katrina and Rita, club members will be contacting "hams" from around the world to mark this particular time frame in history, which caused havoc in the Gulf south region.




This will be the fourth year that SELARC has marked this occasion, with a special event FCC issued Amateur Radio call sign "K5R". "Katrina 5 Rita" operating activities of the special event station will be to promote recognition and serve as a reminder to not only the victims of the devastating events up and down the Gulf coast, but also to honor the tireless efforts of so many of our volunteer Amateur Radio operators and their support groups from all over the United States, that were activated and called upon in support of their local communities and served agencies as a result of the two devastating storms. 

 

The radio operation will be an open to the public event and will be taking place at the Ponchatoula Community Center. The operating schedule calls for the station to go on the air at 9:00 a.m. and end at 3:00 p.m. local time.
