Also, don't be afraid to ask the other op. The experienced ops will probably be able to tell you from your location which grid you are in. It is pretty common to work someone who doesn't know their grid, and most of us are more than happy to help out a new guy:-)

Also, cross mode QSO's are common, and legal, on VHF. If you hear someone calling CQ but can't get their attention, try calling them with CW. Don't be afraid to use CW in the "SSB portion of the band".
Be aware there are often "peak times" during the contest. Early to mid morning, and evenings tend to have the most activity. But a band opening at any time will bring everyone out to play!
Band openings on 6 tend to reduce the activity on 2m. Unless 2 meters opens as well, then it gets real fun:-)
VHF contesting is a blast. If you haven't tried it, get on and make a few QSO's. It's a whole different world from HF contesting.
I'll be Rover in EM68, EM78, EM69, and EM79 in southern Indiana. Can't afford the gas for more! I'll have a big signal on 6,2, and 432.
