Tippecanoe County ARES (Lafayette, IN) will be conducting local training
classes for the ARRL's Emergency Communications Level I (EC-001) course in
January. The classes will be held in three, 3-hour sessions, beginning on
January 17. The three classes will be conducted 3 weeks in a row, on
Saturday mornings, from 9:00 a.m. 12:00 p.m. EST, with the EC-001 exam
scheduled at the end of the final session at 11:00 a.m. on January 31. All
amateurs are invited and welcome. Being a member of ARES is not a
requirement.
ADVANCED REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED TO ATTEND THIS COURSE.
Those interested in taking the course should plan to attend all 3 sessions:
Saturday, January 17 9:00 a.m. Noon
Saturday, January 24 9:00 a.m. Noon
Saturday, January 31 9:00 a.m. 11:00 a.m., EC-001 Exam 11:00 a.m.

The EC-001 course, Introduction to Amateur Radio Emergency Communications,
is a basic course to raise awareness and provide additional knowledge and
tools for any emergency communications volunteer. This course has 23 lesson
units and is a prerequisite to Level II, EC-002 and Level III, EC-003,
Amateur Radio Emergency Communications courses.
There is no cost to attend the training sessions, although if you wish to
take the exam for EC-001, the cost will be the standard ARRL exam fee of
$15.00. By taking and successfully passing the exam, you will receive a
certificate from the ARRL, and be registered as having successfully
completed their EC-001 course. (The online EC-001 course cost is $45 for
ARRL members, $75 for non-members, so this is a considerable cost savings.)
LOCATION:
The training sessions will be held in room C of the Subaru of Indiana
Automotive (SIA) Training & Reception Center. It's the newer looking
building out in front of the Subaru of Indiana Automotive plant on SR 38 E,
just west of I-65. Here's a link to the location on Google maps:

You must enter through the main gate and stop at the guard shack. Security
should have your name on a list to allow you entrance to the Training and
Reception Center. Once you are given a pass and allowed to proceed, turn
right at the first opportunity. Keep going straight through that parking lot
and around to the front of the Training & Reception Center. There is a
parking lot right out in front of it and you should find a spot there,
allowing easy access to the front doors of the Reception Center. If for some
reason security cannot find your name on the list, you will need to be able
to identify yourself as a visitor for the ham radio ARES Meeting in the
Training and Reception Center.
IMPORTANT:
All participants MUST be pre-registered at LEAST 48 hours in advance of the
first class, preferably much sooner. Please contact WR9A (wr9a at verizon.net)
or N9GKE (n9gke at verizon.net) for further information and to register for
this EC-001 class.
Class will start promptly at 9:00 a.m. Please bring a notepad and writing
instruments, as you will need to make notes during these classes. There are
vending machines at the facility, and several restaurants with 3 miles for
those of you who may be attending from out of the area. Talk-in information
can be requested on the 147.135 MHz repeater, with an 88.5 Hz tone.
This is an exciting opportunity for all local hams, and we encourage anyone
that is interested to sign up for these sessions. Class size will be limited
to about 35 people, and is expected to fill up fast. Reserve your spot as
soon as possible! 73
