COMMENTS:
February was a very quiet month. Not very much activity in the state
or reported. I want to thank all the ECs and DECs that sent in reports
this month. The ARRL is requested that All ECs take at least Level I
of The Emergency Communications Course and DECs take all three levels,
since there is now funding to reimburse anyone who takes the training
from ARRL through a reimbursement grant. Now is the time to take the
course if you haven't done so.
Many areas are starting their SkyWarn spotters training programs and
all Amateurs are encouraged to take the class, even if you just took
it last year. I have found that I always come away with something new
each year from the course.
The Wabash Valley Amateur Radio Association, Vigo County ARES and the
Illiana SkyWarn had 54 people in attendance on February 27 for the
local SkyWarn Spotter Training Course in Terre Haute, Indiana at World
Gospel Church. A number of the people in attendance were non-Amateurs
along with representatives from the Indiana State Police and other
agencies. We took advantage of a "captive" audience and showed the new
video "Amateur Radio Today" to the group. If you have not seen this
video, it is very good, we had 2 people come up during the break and
ask about becoming an Amateur Radio Operator and several more seemed
more educated about the hobby. The great turn out was due in part to
the 2 Local TV stations (WTHI and WTWO) and at least 1 radio station
(WMGI) announcing the training the day before and the day of the
class.
Both TV stations were on hand at the class, Dave Tucek (KC9CNF) from
the Indianapolis Office of the National Weather Service along with
several of the local Amateurs were interviewed and appeared on 11pm
editions of the News. We were all very pleased with a the number of
participants, the quality of the training (as always) and it just
shows how a little PR can go a long way.
