[InHam] 146.730

The Goshen 146.730 system has been on for about a year or so, It is
properly spaced from the system in Muncie.

It is not coordinated because there is supposed to be a system in Chicago on
that frequency. The Chicago system has not updated with the Illinois
Repeater Association for many years and their coordinates are invalid unless
this system is out in the lake. We have not received any complaints from
the Chicago system.

We have had band openings over the last three weeks. People have been
hearing systems from hundreds of miles out and 2 meter SSB enthusiasts have
been working stations all over the US. Most of us are hearing other
stations on our repeater frequencies. This usually happens during mid
summer.

Since the Goshen system has been on for over a year and you are just now
hearing it, this is probably band conditions.

The purpose of repeater coordination is not to guarantee everybody a "clear
channel". During normal conditions we try to coordinate so as to avoid
users of one repeaters from overriding users of another system and avoid the
output of one repeater from overriding the output of another repeater within
it's intended coverage area. If you are using a base station antenna, you
can expect to hear other repeaters on your frequency under normal conditions
because repeaters are intended primarily for portable and mobile use.

All bets must be off during band openings or we would have to space
repeaters at 250 miles plus and would only have about one third to one
fourth of the systems we have today.

And I don't remember hearing them in the last 20 years. remember hearing
Ill. and Ohio stations before but never any from up around that way.

BTW: What's up with 146.730?
We have a repeater on that pair here in Muncie, been here for 20 years I
think, coordinated.. We get a machine and users from Ohio and Bedford, now
there's apparently a new one in Goshen..

I thought the coordinators were supposed to help prevent this sort of
thing?

The 146.730 system in Goshen is about 100 miles from the Muncie system.
There has been a BIG band opening for the last couple of weeks. That is
probably why you are hearing it.
