[ILQSO] KJ9C/m should be QRV at 1700

I certainly wasn't belittling your QRP efforts, Kevin....just admiring them :)

I think your basic operating strategy is quite sound, and you have certainly had good results doing it. Hope you can come back to IL next year!

I hope you had a good run, Mel.

Hi, guys. Sorry I couldn't operate, but I had to be up in Wisconsin away from radios.

Regarding Jim's comment. First a more flippant comment: QRP - "Just do it" to borrow the Nike phrase. This applies to all QRP operating, not just mobile. Ignore the thought that you are QRP and don't look at it as a disadvantage. Just operate. Treat it as the level of signal you put out and those who can hear you are who you work. To that end, I almost exclusively call CQ in all contests and typically don't try search and pounce operations unless I happen to hear a muttiplier I reallly really want. That way, by calling CQ, I know that those who call back can hear me, whereas if you are trying to call stations only, you have no idea if you are being heard and can potentially waste lots of time.

The way I it also do it is to be stationary mobile - I only operate when I am stopped in a parking lot. I don't have a driver. What I am is a portable station using mobile car-mounted hamstick antennas. That's all. My signal is more stable that way. My biggest challenge most of the time is trying to find and hold onto to an open frequency. I'm usually the one being driven off of a frequency when someone else grabs it.

Having said all this, I realize that I don't generate many points for the club I support. And I don't always present the best signal to those seeking my county(ies). I do it because a QRP signal is what I can provide, and usually I try to participate for the good of being in the state QSO Party. Those that work me still benefit by the points and hopefully the multiplier. My method is probably not Mel's cup of tea, who is wanting to activate as many counties as they can (whereas I can comfortably due only five or six in the time I have) and therefore benefit from a stronger signal.

Hopefully next year I will be operating again. In the meantime, I look forward to seeing the scores and in particular reading soapbox comments.

Cheers/73,
Kevin, K9IUA

p.s. If I have any state QSO Party operating complaint - and I realize I'm stepping on some really shaky ground saying this - is that I have a beef in general against out-of-state operators calling CQ into the state and tying up a frequency. I say leave the frequencies for the guys in the state to use and otherwise do search and pounce only.
