[ILQSO] TAZE or TAZW?

I'm also amazed that I've overlooked that for so long...we'll get it corrected :)

Some logging programs can be edited to accept about anything you decide to use for county abbreviations (TrLog comes to mind...). I guarantee that as long as we can tell what you meant, whatever is logged for TAZ/TAZE/TAZW/TAW/TAE/TWE/TZL/.... will get credit for the mult.

I personally would like to see county abbreviations standardized for all QSO parties as for the MARAC CW test....but that may not be practical. I can't tell you how many times I've sent a county designator in a QSO party and found out later I was doing in wrong....

Looking forward to working W9TAZ, or W040, in TAZW...or TAZE...or somewhere...

Hi Ric,
I can't tell you the number of times I have looked at the summary
sheet and never noticed the spelling error. The abbreviations are quite old
and evidently the mistake goes back a while as well. There was good reason
for using the four letter abbreviations and yes, many logging programs would
have to be changed if we do change the abbreviation. I am not sure which, if
any, logging programs accept more than the one listed, TAZW. Due to some
duplications, not all counties can use the first 4 letters of the name (or
first 3 letters) although I am sure there would be no confusion if TAZW
originally had been assigned TAZE. The county abbreviations will most likely
remain the same but I am pretty sure the spelling error will be corrected.

When I operated as W9TAZ in the 2008 Illinois QSO Party, it initially struck
me odd that callers would question my sending TAZE for Tazewell County. Many
callers would politely explain that the abbreviation is TAZW. Later, when I
examined the official Illinois QSO Party Summary Sheet posted on the
website, I finally realized why. The County is misspelled. -hi Perhaps this
should be changed from the current spelling of TAZWELL to the correct
spelling of TAZEWELL? http://www.tazewell.com/

As the abbreviation, wouldn't it be appropriate to use TAZE, rather than
TAZW? Is TAZ too short for a compromise? Will the logging programs accept
all three abbreviations without hanging up the software or crashing the
computer?

I prefer not to waste time debating issues like this during a contest, while
I'm endeavoring to work as many stations as possible within a limited period
of time. It defeats the purpose and is too frustrating.

Meanwhile, I've asked the trustee to authorize me to temporarily use W9TAZ
in the 2010 Illinois QSO Party. However, I'm awaiting a decision. If W9TAZ
is unavailable, work me as wo4o/9 or wo4o/TAZE or wo4o/TAZW or wo4o/TAZ or .

Either way, I intend to operate fulltime from TAZEWELL County, primarily CW,
secondarily Phone.
