Do you have a good source of info on local ARES groups and contacts? I think that's a great angle if we can just get people charged up about it.

That is what I have felt the past few years, but getting hams to get on is
not an easy job. Downstate is really tough and the ham population is a bit
sparser. I have sent many email requests out each year, mostly to downstate
stations, looking for some more stations to get on, even trying to use the
ARES network and promoting the event as an emergency practice drill, but few
takers. There are about 30 counties a year that are activated by one lone
mobile, a few more a two mobiles and just a couple more activated by only a
fixed station.
I also keep promoting more VHF activity and getting more of the VHF only
crowd involved, but again, that is tough to do. Even those that do get on
cannot find anyone to work on 6 and 2 meters. I think I might have worked a
dozen or so stations on VHF one year, but it was all locals that I pretty
much begged to move from HF to VHF, almost all 2 meter FM. I do remember
hearing WX9JC last year calling on 2 meter FM but I was not able to get his
attention, so at least some of us are trying on VHF.
We need to promote more county line/corner operations. It seems there are a
lot of hams that love to operate Field Day, we need to direct their efforts
to an October outing as well.

I do have a solution:
KB9FBI in Morgan last year made a good effort at "recruiting" some new ILQP
participants. I know some of the rest of you have done similar things, but
this is the "solution" to getting all the IL counties on the air for ILQP.
If everyone on this reflector could recruit 3 other hams from somewhere in
the state to participate, we would see a remarkable increase in overall
enjoyment. There are hams in almost all IL counties. Most would operate
from their home stations. A few would go out and put on a couple of local
counties from their mobile stations. A few would find a good spot in a
nearby state park and operate portable. A few would do this with a group
and make it a "second Field Day". No better time of year than October to do
this in Illinois!
The ones who still wanted to do full-bore mobile efforts would be very much
appreciated, but they wouldn't be under the gun to cover 2/3 of the state
each year!!!
Flame-retardant suit in place.
