Near Grand Rapids here in Michigan there was, literally, a "pothole"
which almost swallowed an automobile. It turned out that a water main
had broken, probably due to freeze-thaw cycles and bitterly cold
weather, which caused the foundation of the road to get washed away,
leaving just the pavement with no support. A car hit this, and wound up
with the nose of the car swallowed in the hole up to the front door and
the windshield.

So, Illinois and Oklahoma don't have a corner on potholes!
