[ILQSO] Line noise

I have an FT900, and the noise blanker is pretty decent for ignition
noise, electric fences and such. It has NO effect on line noise. It
also introduces a lot of distortion if there are adjacent strong signals
(think "contest environment"....). I avoided using it as much as
possible, but it wasn't helping anyhow.
I have an IC746Pro that I've considered putting in the car, though it's
not what I'd call a "mobile rig". I might just take it on a tour of the
neighborhood and see what the NB does compared to the FT900.
Just like the Cubs and the Indians..."wait 'til next year'.

Jim,
A very tough problem indeed. There always seem to be power lines
paralleling the county line roads, so they're especially hard to
avoid for an ILQP county line operation. Obviously a noise blanker
such as the one in the IC-706 is a good start but it's not completely
effective. I suspect there's a lot of variance in the noise spectra
of different power lines.
I wonder how good the digital noise blanker in the IC-7000 is. Icom's
website says "The NB level and width (blanking duration) are
adjustable in 100 steps." Of course, it's hard to dink around with
the settings when you're flying down a gravel road.
Anyone out there with an IC-7000 who can comment on the effectiveness
of the digital noise blanker for power line noise?
73,
Joe K9LY
