Jim,
I tried to reply to John via the list, but qth.net rejected it. Could
you please forward to him.

I have some older IBM Thinkpads 600/600e and an Averatec. The IBM ac
supply puts out 16v, and the Averatec puts out 19v, but I run them
directly from the vehicle aux plug (13+ volts with engine running). This
got rid of the inverter noise. When the voltage drops below about 12.8
volts, the thinkpad beeps and switches to internal battery.

Although the IBM wallwart puts out 16v, the IBM spec sheet says:
battery pack voltage (nominal): 10.8v
operating range: 7-17v

You might want to check the specs on your laptop. Service/maintenance
manuals are sometimes available at the manufacturer's site, or the info
you need about voltages may also be in the user manual.

Now to get rid of the gps noise.

73,
BOB/k4mut
