In LOTW does one absitively require /9 or /p or whatever? I ain't never
used LOTW yet, but have received cards which say I may QSL via LOTW.

If I were entering a contact into LOTW, I'd only use N8XX (or N9Q or N8M
or W8B if I were using one of those calls) even if I were operating
portable or mobile, unless LOTW demanded something which wasn't needed
by the Friendly Candy Company..

I believe in the KISS principle....

The slash is short for "portable" and vice-versa. So it's redundant to say:

    ...strobe portable
    ...slash portable

This does become an issue, however, when Logbook of the World is looking for a
callsign match.

You could say "AA9DY portable 9" which most folks would log as AA9DY/9
