The IQP needs lots of stations on both modes! Generally, CW gets through
better from low-power mobiles, so that has been the mode of choice for
mobile operation. A strong mobile on 40 SSB can develop a good following,
however. Also, if 20 meter conditions are good, 20 SSB can be a great way
to pick up mults. The biggest problem with 40 SSB is of course, the fact
that the band is trashed by BC stations after sunset. A fixed station with
good ears can still do well, but it is rough sledding from a mobile.
I'd like to see just *one* year when I could work a significant number of
stations on 10 SSB in IQP, but it's never happened from my mobile setup.
Even when conditions are "good", the contest starts just about the time of
day when Europe fades out, leaving a few South Americans and perhaps the
West Coast. California is only one multiplier....
