I lost 0.4 pounds this week.
Or did I? Play the following game with your scale.
Weigh yourself.
Step off the scale and pick up your drink.
Weigh youself again.
Even an 8 oz drink weighs half-a-pound so you should see a change.
Even though the bathroom scales we use indicate tenths-of-a-pound
I'm skeptical that they are that accurate. I also think they're
programmed to give the same reading if someone repeats a weighing.
They do that to give a false impression of accuracy.
To get around that programming try this.
Weigh yourself.
Step off the scale and pick up something heavy like a case of diet pop.
Weigh yourself again.
Step off the scale and put the case of pop down.
Weigh yourself again.
Repeat that a few times and see if you get consistent readings.
My scale varies by about a pound on the same weight if I do that.
My scale isn't worthless though. If it shows that I've lost about
10 pounds then I've probably lost between 9 and 11 pounds
but I've really lost the weight. That's good enough accuracy
for watching our weight. If you want better accuracy then
you can buy a commercial scale with a specified accuracy that's
been calibrated. Such things are more expensive than we can
afford though. I'm happy with what I've got.
