Two large ham radio public service events in Northern Illinois are coming up over the next two weekends, and the organizers could use some additional help. If you would like to volunteer, please contact the organizer of the event's ham radio support by e-mail, directly, ASAP.

Udder Century--Sunday 04 June

On Sunday, 04 June, a group of hams organized by Wendell Smith N9REP will provide communications, safety, and SAG support for the 35th Annual Udder Century Invitational bike ride.  The ride begins in Crystal Lake. Most hams drive the course in motor vehicles to help cyclists who need assistance and to address safety problems. A bike rack is helpful but not essential. Great snacks are available at the rest stops, and volunteers are invited to post-race pasta dinner. Volunteers are needed from around 7 AM to 5 PM, but we can use your help even if you can't work the entire time.  To volunteer, e-mail Wendell Smith N9REP, at

Tour de Cure for Diabetes--Sunday 11 June

The Tour de Cure for Diabetes is a large bike ride fundraiser that benefits the American Diabetes Association and their research and support programs for people with Diabetes. The ride begins in Aurora and extends north, west, and south, mostly on back roads. THE ORGANIZERS ARE ESPECIALLY LOOKING FOR HAMS THAT CAN OPERATE "BICYCLE MOBILE", AND FOR MOTORCYCLISTS. Motorcyclists need not be hams; the communications team will furnish a business-band radio that requires no amateur license.  Other openings may be available. I'm consolidating a few announcements that may be
of interest:

1.  The Illinois State ARES HF Net, which is held
    on the 1st and 3rd Sunday of the month at 1630
    local time, will be changing frequency to 7230
    KHz (plus or minus a few KHz) for the summer.
    (Effective Sunday 18 June 2017.)

2.  Melrose Park Public Safety and Homeland
    Security has a new weekly net on Tuesday
    evenings at 1830 local time, on 147.36 MHz
    R+600 PL136.5.  Check-in to learn about
    Melrose Park's ARES and other volunteer
    programs.

3.  The Illinois Statewide Simulated Emergency
    Test (SET) will be held over a 73-hour period,
    starting Thursday, 2 November 2017 at Noon,
    local time, and ending Sunday, 5 November
    2017, at Noon.  Yes, November.  Please mark
    your calendars. More details to be announced.

Dear Illinois Hams:

Come on out to ARRL? Field Day, the annual exercise that combines emergency communications preparedness, fun, operating skills, creative problem solving, the installation of antennas in the most unlikely places, fun, fellowship, friendly rivalries with other clubs, good food, sunburn, mosquitoes, and fun!

ARRL? Field Day is the largest Amateur Radio emergency communications exercise, and will be held this weekend, Saturday and Sunday, June 24 and 25.

Amateur radio operators (or "hams") numbering in the tens of thousands, throughout the US and Canada, will demonstrate their emergency communications capabilities by trying to contact as many other stations as possible over a 24 to 27 hour period, using emergency power sources and temporary stations and antennas erected in the field for this event. Many hams participate in this event as part of a local amateur radio club or emergency communications volunteer group. Some clubs/groups operate at the Emergency Operations Center (EOC) of a government or other served agency, instead of building stations in the field.

Field Day is not just for experienced hams. Visiting a club/group Field Day operation is a great way for new hams to learn more about emergency communications and to meet other hams in their neighborhood. And Field Day is an excellent introduction to ham radio for the general public.

I encourage all amateurs, and prospective amateurs, to participate in this fun and educational emergency communications exercise. Most clubs/groups will be delighted to welcome you as a visitor, even if you're not a member of the group, and even if you're not a licensed ham.

And when you come out to Field Day, PLEASE BRING A FRIEND! We all know some good candidates for a visit to Field Day.  An inactive ham, perhaps one who has strayed away.  A ham without an HF station, perhaps someone living where an HF antenna is not permitted.  A non-ham neighbor or co-worker who has expressed an interest in electronics or communications technology.

Several large clubs are at new locations this year, and other clubs are trying new antennas, operating modes, and techniques.  So there's plenty new to see, even if you've "seen it all".
