Members and Friends: Providing public service communications for events involving the public is a great way to exercise the same equipment and operating skills you will need in a real emergency. It's also a terrific opportunity to assist your community and demonstrate amateur radio in the best possible light. Please consider helping with these upcoming events. (If you've never participated in a ham-radio public service event before, don't worry--there are plenty of experienced folks to give you a helping hand.) === On Sunday, 07 June 2015, hams will be providing assistance for the Udder Century Bike Run. Hams supply rider and logistics support, called SAG ("Support And Gear"), which consists of traveling the routes (in a vehicle), assisting riders and notifying the event coordinators of any problems. A bike rack is helpful but not absolutely necessary. This event starts in Union, IL, in the northwest suburbs, and extends into Wisconsin. To sign up or for more information, contact Wendell Smith N9REP: === On the following Sunday, 14 June 2015, hams will be assisting with the Tour de Cure, a bicycle ride that benefits the American Diabetes Association. Helping find a cure for Diabetes is surely a cause worthy of our support. Nearly 24 million Americans have diabetes, so virtually all of us have a relative or friend affected by this disease. Hams provide SAG support (drivers and navigators), patrol the course as "bike mobiles", "sweep" the course for stragglers, and perform other communications-related tasks. There may be opportunities for non-hams (16 and over) to assist. The Tour de Cure starts at the Two Brothers Roundouse in Aurora and extends through DuPage, Kane, and Kendall counties. To sign up or for more information, contact Michael Johnson KC9QLT: === I hope to see you at these fun, rewarding public service events. 73 --Neil Ormos N9NL ARES? Dear Illinois Hams: Come on out to ARRL? Field Day, the annual exercise that combines emergency communications preparedness, fun, operating skills, creative problem solving, the installation of antennas in the most unlikely places, fun, fellowship, friendly rivalries with other clubs, good food, sunburn, mosquitos, and fun! ARRL? Field Day is the largest Amateur Radio emergency communications exercise, and will be held this weekend, Saturday and Sunday, June 27 and 28. Amateur radio operators (or "hams") numbering in the tens of thousands, throughout the US and Canada, will demonstrate their emergency communications capabilities by trying to contact as many other stations as possible over a 24 to 27 hour period, using emergency power sources and temporary stations and antennas erected in the field for this event. Many hams participate in this event as part of a local amateur radio club or emergency communications volunteer group. Some clubs/groups operate at the Emergency Operations Center (EOC) of a government or other served agency, instead of building stations in the field. Field Day is not just for experienced hams. Visiting a club/group Field Day operation is a great way for new hams to learn more about emergency communications and to meet other hams in their neighborhood. And Field Day is an excellent introduction to ham radio for the general public. I encourage all amateurs, and prospective amateurs, to participate in this fun and educational emergency communications exercise. Most clubs/groups will be delighted to welcome you as a visitor, even if you're not a member of the group, and even if you're not a licensed ham. And when you come out to Field Day, PLEASE BRING A FRIEND! We all know some good candidates for a visit to Field Day. An inactive ham, perhaps one who has strayed away. A ham without an HF station, perhaps someone living where an HF antenna is not permitted. A non-ham neighbor or co-worker who has expressed an interest in electronics or communications technology. Several large clubs are at new locations this year, and other clubs are trying new antennas, operating modes, and techniques. So there's plenty new to see, even if you've "seen it all". Maps and additional information on club/group Field Day operations in Illinois in 2015 are available at the Illinois and Chicago-Area Field Day Drectory: Also, the ARRL has a Field Day Locator Map at: Wishing everyone a fun, successful, and *safe* Field Day, 73 --Neil Ormos N9NL ARES?
