The Metro Amateur Radio Club will hold a special event at Evanston’s
Grosse Point Lighthouse, 2601 Sheridan Road. The event is sanctioned
by Evanston's Lighthouse Park District in conjunction with its Band
in the Park Day and celebration of National Lighthouse Day and
International Amateur Radio Lighthouse Day. Setup will be at 10:00
a.m. and the special event station will operate until 5:00 p.m. on
Sunday, August 19 for ham radio transmissions from the lighthouse
site to other sites around country and the world.

This operation at Grosse Point Lighthouse started some years back
when now-retired Chief of Police, Frank Kaminski, thought it would be
a good way to honor Lt. Robert Heytow of the Evanston Police
Department who had died. Bob Heytow was a ham radio operator. The
equipment will be powered from the south fog signal building and the
equipment will be set up outside of the building. In honor of Bob,
callsign K9YA will be used by the operators for this event.

The annual Amateur Radio International Lighthouse Day has grown in
the past seven years to over 380 lighthouses in some 51 countries
around the world participating in the event. The basic objective of
the event is to promote public awareness of lighthouses and
lightships, their need for reservation and restoration, to promote
amateur radio, and to foster international goodwill.

Amateur radio operators and the public are invited to watch the
operators and, if interested, participate in contacts with other
lighthouses and lightships around the world.
