The North Shore Radio Club will link its repeaters February 2 for the 8:00
p.m. CST net. Check in on the two meter repeater (147.345 MHz, +600 Hz, PL 107.2
Hz) or the 440 repeater (442.075 +5MHz, PL 100.0 Hz). However, please check
2-meters if you don't hear us on UHF. It's suggested that the operator pause
for about a second after keying the microphone to allow the linkage to pick up
the request to transmit, especially on the 440 band.
In addition to local traffic, and John Wass with the local hamfest and
American Radio Relay League (ARRL) news, this week's net will include the
RAIN
Report and Amateur Radio Newsline. The RAIN Report is "Vern Jackson - His
Story" Part Two Vern Jackson, WA0RCR, has produced the Gateway 160-Meter Radio
Newsletter on 1860 KHz from Wentzville, Missouri, since June 1, 1979. He chose
160 meters as that was one band he could successfully operate early on that
didn't generate RFI in his neighbor's radio and telephone. Twenty-five years
later he's still transmits this professionally-produced bulletin service Saturday
afternoons and evenings in magnificent plate-modulated AM audio using his
commercial station in his basement near St. Louis. Last week during Hap Holly's
interview with Vern, we heard about his early days in ham radio. This week we
hear how his Gateway 160-Meter Radio Newsletter got started and what programming
he's transmitting on it today.
Amateur Radio Newsline gives us information on the new ARRL president, a
defective TV converter triggers a search and rescue effort, a radio club gets a
$150,000 Homeland Security grant for Emergency Communications and an update on
the upcoming launch of Suit Sat.
All licensed amateurs are welcome to check in. Checkins are taken at the
beginning of the net, between RAIN and Newsline, and after Newsline.

Marilyn Tschannen Gardner, W9LUO
