Dear Cook County ARES Members and Friends:

This Friday and Saturday, many National Weather
Service (NWS) offices across the country will
participate in Skywarn Recognition Day, an amateur
radio operating event that celebrates the
contributions that Skywarn Weather Spotters make
to public safety. The event begins at 1800 CST on
Friday December 2 (0000 UTC Saturday), and ends at
1800 CST on Saturday (2400 UTC Saturday). The
object is to work as many NWS stations as
possible. Exchange calls, signal report, QTH, and
a one or two word description of the weather. A
certificate is available.

The NWS forecast office for the Chicago area,
located in Romeoville, will be on the air on HF
and 2m using callsign W9S. There may also be some
activity on IRLP and Echolink.

In addition, the NWS forecast office in Romeoville
will be hosting an open house for amateur radio
operators and their immediate families on
Saturday, from 0900 to 1500 CST. This is a great
opportunity to get a behind-the-scenes look at the
NWS office that serves our communities, and to
meet some of the dedicated people who work there.

forecast office in Romeoville, visit:

I encourage everyone to participate in this
valuable and fun operating activity.
