Public Invited

Northbrook, Illinois

Contact: Rob Orr (847) 724-5228, [email protected]

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE=20

The North Shore Radio Club and the Metro Amateur Radio Club invite the =
public to an Amateur Radio special event station. The special event is =
called Field Day and will be held at The Gazebo in the Park in =
Northbrook at 1810 Walters Avenue. You are invited to bring your family =
and friends. Everyone may operate a Ham radio (with an experienced =
operator present). We use this opportunity to demonstrate Amateur Radio =
capabilities for providing valuable emergency communication. The event =
is open to the public at no charge.

This is an annual international exercise that runs 24 hours (rain or =
shine) from 1:00pm on Saturday June 28 to 1:00pm on Sunday June 29, =
2003. Our Clubs will operate four different types of radio stations and =
make contact with thousands of other amateur radio operators around the =
world to demonstrate the potential power of Amateur Radio during a =
national or local disaster.

Events of September 11 and May's tornado season demonstrate that =
emergencies that cripple communications can happen at anytime - =
anywhere. FCC's Special Counsel for Amateur Radio Enforcement Riley =
Hollingworth made it very clear how important Amateur Radio services are =
to a community when he said, "Amateur Radio operators have a lot to be =
proud of. Amateurs have a fail-safe system of communication."

Amateur Radio stations use special FCC-licensed frequencies on the HF =
(High Frequency), VHF (Very High Frequency) and UHF (Ultra High =
Frequency) bands. Operators will use voice, digital, INTERNET and Morse =
code technology to communicate.

North Shore Radio Club and Metro Radio Club members range in age from 12 =
to 95 and live in the northern suburbs. They will be setting up =
portable radio stations using emergency power in a simulation to prepare =
for emergencies such as floods, tornadoes, and other natural disasters =
where normal communications may be compromised. One principal objective =
of this exercise is to test equipment and communication skills by =
participating in a contest to contact as many of the thousands of other" =
Amateur Radio Field Day" stations in North America as possible in =
24-hours. A second objective is to demonstrate to the public many =
opportunities that Amateur Radio offers for fun and personal skill =
improvement.

Rob Orr, Club President North Shore Radio Club stated, "Field Day is =
open to the public and it is a great way for us to show the world how =
Amateur Radio can be of service to the community." It allows us to =
show people what this hobby is all about. To learn more about Field Day =
and Amateur Radio, visit our Clubs' websites at www.ns9rc.org and =
