The original unit (2000) finals were 2SC2904 NPN transistors. I believe later units have different transistors for the final, but I do not have that documentation to verify.

My perception has been pretty much confirmed. The 718 is just too old to consider even in the $600 price range for a new unit.
The ICOM has always been on the top of my list since the U.S. Headquarters is just a few miles from my house. However, there is no longer the customer service there once was so might start looking at some plan B options.
