I have Standard C-508A.  250mW, no keypad, runs on 2 AA batteries... 
$289 back in the day, but for a tiny wide-band rig, it was great.  I 
certainly gave it a workout!  It was fine in the Los Angles area, never 
had an issue with repeaters.  I don't recall how well it did simplex.

My first HT was a Standard/Marantz Japan C-228A at $750!!!  I had to 
make payments on it for six months!

My current Icoms are an older 706MKII, and a new-in-box (bought new when 
discontinued, set it on a shelf) 706MKIIg I'm holding out on using until 
I install it in a new vehicle, and I'm holding out on new installs until 
I get an SDR to sniff around for RFI in the vehicle.

I discovered RFI/EMI tape to help quiet any noise on wiring harnesses.
