[ICOM] OK, so has anybody on here replace the trimmer caps on the IC-471? any other work?

The problem of trimmers is oxidation at the place where rotors and stators touch each other. It can be cured (temporarily?) by just rotating a rotor a few times back and forth around its normal position until the oxidation layer is destroyed. I am not sure about IC-471, but I made such a "massage" to an IC-761 and turned it back to life without replacing trimmers.
I am afraid, a VHF rig is way more sensitive to misalignment than a HF one, but if it's dead anyway and there were clear signs of trimmers' deterioration, one may try cleaning trimmers' surfaces. Just clearly note a current position of a rotor and make sure, you put it back to the same position after the rotation. The ideal situation is to adjust trimmers for proper HF output voltage after their rotation and/or replacement, but you still need a service manual for that... The trimmers should be rotated strictly one by one. Needless to say, you need a dielectric screwdriver.
Hope it helps.

He doesn't want to tackle it, and being a technician I understand why. He would have to charge me more than I had to pay for my first car. I would like to know what others know before I make it worse, I have some trimmers ordered and not sure they will physically fit, trying to knock the learning curve down some. It would help if Icom had a maintenance manual. They never had one out the door to the public. There are a couple of sites on the web that claim to have one, but be careful, they are not safe, do not download anything WARNING!!!! I have been assured there is no manual by someone I trust completely, Pete "the manual man"

Ok, so there is no maintenance manual! wonder if anybody has worked on it and
may have so helpful suggestions?

Thanks in advance,
