The female portion of the connector on the cord end is very well known
among users, and the manufacturer to be of defective design, both in
alloy, and manufacture, and causes almost all power-on issues when the
head connector has been cleaned, the power supply verified good, and no
blown fuses. It has been gone over dozens of times on this group alone,
and many dozens more, since the 90's.
In short: Clean out the inside of the female portion of the connector,
as oxidation, dirt, and arcing cause problems. The looseness of the
connector causes arcing, which leads to problems, so the connector must
be tightened by re-rolling the contacts so they are tighter, and the
crap alloy causes them to open again, heating, opening more, then
arcing, cause a failure. From the get-go, they are the beginning of the
end, merely by their existence, and usage. Inspect the male portion of
the connector, which usually isn't a problem, but may have some issues
due to arcing, if so, clean that side as well.
I discovered all this shortly after buying my rig, and many, many, many
others have had the same problem. After the second or third time fixing
this, I removed the power connector, put a fiberglass plate in the slot
on the radio side, and used two 6-32 stainless steel bolts for power,
with locking hardware on the cord side, never an issue again.
