Hi John,
I also have an Icom IC-706MKIIG. I have never had any problem with it.
I would suggest that you clean the recepticle on the remote head and the one
on the radio. Not just the plug on the ends of the seperation cable.
I hope that helps. BTW, I am not an appliance operator.
