[ICOM] ICOM 706MK2G DISPLAY PROBLEM

I've had plenty of rigs, including my IC-706MKIIG go through Florida
hurricanes without issue. That does not say rigs could not get damaged.
LCDs are sensitive to temperature and sunlight. They are a really bad
choice for radios, especially for mobile. I'll spare my list of
disadvantages to an LCD. They can be expected to last for about 10 years if
not exposed to sub freezing or the extreme heat of mobile use in the SW
(Like AZ) or SE (like FL) or the northern winters. Many LCDs do last
longer and survive the extremes without damage. Others fail.

Without seeing yours it is difficult to say what cold be the problem. The
way they are made (in layers) it could be one is separating for some
reason. If ICOM put a layer of their own (like a thin plastic window on
the faceplate) and mounted the LCD behind it, then dust could get between
the window and the display. Looking at mine it does not appear that is the
case, but I can't tell for sure without taking the faceplate apart.

Maybe there is an on-line service manual that will show a break-out of the
faceplate and display.

Once a product reaches the age of these it generally becomes difficult to
find new parts no matter where they were made. Back in the day of
repairable made in USA it was easier since the local shop may have stocked
a part they never sold.

Post a comment on the many ham forums and lists for a good used complete
front section.
