: Thanks Kurt,
: that sure sounds more like it...

I have a section of the extension cable sitting next to me on the desk. I
suppose, at some point, I should take a photo of it an offer it up so it can
spread around the web, I've had it since 1999.

One must wonder, if it were fiber-optic, why would it have metal contacts on
each end?

Since it is metal, has nobody bothered to check it with a meter?

I think the fiber-optic story was originally created by Icom for two
reasons.

One, you'll buy a new cable from them.

Two, if you lengthen the cable, there's a chance you'll risk the chance of
excessive RFI, perhaps even enough to affect your own radio.

If you lengthen it and find you have RFI after lengthening, remove it and
run the radio with the faceplate connected directly. If it goes away, check
with the new cable again.

If the problem proves to originate with the cable, some clamp-on ferrite
chokes can help. Chances are the problem won't be bad, so only a couple at
each end, one for lower frequencies and one for higher frequencies will most
likely solve any issues. Place them as close as reasonable to each end of
your cable, the idea is to attenuate the emissions as close to the potential
source as possible, the radio or the head.
