Another thing came to mind...

Has the radio been jarred or bumped hard or have you been fiddling around 
inside?

Several years ago I had a request to change out a damaged audio output jack 
on the back of a 756PRO.  The fellow bought the part, even a Metcal 
soldering station for me to use, said it was cheaper than shipping the radio 
to a repair shop.  I carefully removed what I needed to get to the jack, 
maybe a board or two, I recall unplugging some ribbon cable and some small 
gray co-ax.  I did the repair, replaced everything, but forgot to plug in 
one little co-ax.  If I recall correctly, it had something to do with the IF 
section for SSB.  He fired up the rig, put it through it's paces, everything 
worked except SSB which had a hollow, airy, howling type noise that got 
worse when the volume was turned up with no change in sound when other 
settings were changed.
