That's perfectly fine to ask questions like this for all of us human beings.
Apparently you will need a 3.5 mm plug. If it is mono, on the back of that
you immediately get 2 contacts to put the voltmeter across. If it is stereo,
then you use the tip and the opposite contact leaving the mid one untouched.
You may also find extension cords equipped with 3.5 mm male plugs at the
both ends.
Don't put any probe inside the socket directly. You don't want to shorten
the CI-V port by that.

Thank you Vlad! I hope I can ask a very silly question. How does one put the
voltmeter "across" the CI-V port. One probe I presume goes inside the CI-V
port. Does the other probe simply get grounded to the rig?

You may put a voltmeter across the CI-V port, then turn the rig on and then
rotate the tuning knob. If the voltage changes between 5V and a lower level
during rotation, then your rig is OK. You may also repeat the procedure
toggling the TRANSCEIVE option on/off. An analog voltmeter is better than
modern digital multimeters which are pretty slow in response.

Noticed at Field Day that my 756 Pro2 wasn't communicating with the computer
for frequency info. I resolved when I got home to make sure my 756 Pro3
(different rig) was working fine, then substitute the Pro2 and modify
software settings to make sure something was really wrong.
Imagine my surprise when the Pro3 was exhibiting the same behavior. No
frequency info between rig and software. I substituted a second Rigblaster
with the same result.
Before I send both rigs off for repair (who knows what may have happened,
but the Pro2 hasn't even been connected to an antenna), is there a good way
to test the CI-V port?
