One of my friends has been replacing tiny light bulbs with white LEDs
from strings of Christmas lights.  (He found a large quantity of lights
by dumpster diving.)  These things have a molded-on green base, which
he removes by holding the LED with pliers in the stream from a heat gun.
The green plastic softens and can be pulled off without melting the LED.

These LEDs have a conical hole in the tip, which seems to make them
emit light at a wide angle rather than in a concentrated spot.
