[ICOM] External Tuner

Many Icoms have that plastic plug for connection of an external tuner.
Even some Icoms that have a tuner built-in.
If you are using an external tuner, how do you indicate to the radio 
that you want to use it, and not
the built-in one?
I would think when you hold the "tune" button, or "tuner" to activate 
the tuner...the built in one will begin its' search.
Anyone??
