Charlie; While I do not own a KPA-500 amplifier, I do have 2 ham friends who do. Both also own Icom radios. Here is what I do know. The KPA-500 has 2 methods of determining the operating frequency. One is via measuring the input drive RF & calculating from that info, and the other is by actual band data from its driving source. Elecraft says either is OK. The 2nd issue is the amount of RF drive the exciter supplies on each band for the operator determined output. The amp I believe is capable of protecting itself from overdrive. The question here is do you trust it and yourself from over driving the amp all the time and circumstances. It is possible to hook up an amp to exciter ALC line to add another step of protection. This is obviously not that convenient to do, but it is a safety means. As regarding how to hook it up, I am sure that info is included in the manual or Elecraft will be happy to assist.Take care and enjoy your KPA-500.It is a great amp.

Has anyone on this list used the KPA500 amp with the 746Pro??? If so how
did you hook the cabling together?? I'm not to clear on how the cables hook
to each other and sure don't want to blow this amp or the radio up! Any
help appreciated.
