Radios for HF that also have two meters and four forty bands, have to 
make some choices about the front end filters. Most radios open up the 
front in filters to accept the higher two meter and four forty 
frequencies used for transmitting. As a result front end performance can 
suffer on hf as compared to front end filters that are for hf only. 
Exceptions are when hf is separate from the rest of the bands and doesnt 
share the same front end filters..... such as the Kenwood TS-2000.

More information about this new Icom radio would help sort out its 
performance expectations, or why they are not measuring up to expectations.

Still have my Icom IC-720 that I bought new when it first came out (not 
A version that had more phase noise) and its still working.
