Cud have been rf coming down the mic lead and into ur audio circuit. RF distortion of audio is sometimes described as crackling by listeners to ur transmitted signal.

I didn't think to try that, and I made a new cord from some cat5 cable which seems to have solved the problem. I can't swap back because I cut a connector off the Icom cable to replace the connector, and because of the bare wire used, I can't get the new connector on.
