So I Understand then when we switch from say SSB to RTTY, we need to turn down the mic gain so any sounds in the area that is picked up by the MIC does not get mixed in with the RTTY signal.

Correct. When operating the signalink box through the acc connector the mic audio does not mute. So you will transmit all of the background noise along with mode of transmission. The rig should stay in USB mode for AFSK, PSK, RTTY, etc.

In coming as in going "INTO" the rig. From the signalink box not incoming as from the airwaves.

Correct. The speech processor affects your transmitted audio, not the received audio between the 718 and signalink box.
The speech processor destroys my transmitted audio so it is always turned off.
