Because that's what the KWM 2 is worth to those buyers. A KWM 2, relative to the IC740, is somewhat rare.  Plus, people who collect older radios are prepared to pay more for the Collins brand and associated quality (relative to the Eico radios of the day) than for a Seven-Drifty-Three).

The IC 740 is now, unless you're a real ICOM fan, at best $400, particularly since that's what a 751a, arguably a much better radio, is worth. 

If it wasn't worth $1200 to its buyers, it wouldn't sell for $1200.
