When the receive level is low try tapping on the case of the radio. If
it's a connection or relay problem in the radio it may pop right back up
to normal. If it's repeatable each time the receive level drops then you
can be pretty sure that there is a relay or connection problem in the
radio, not an antenna problem.
If it's in the radio, try unplugging then plugging back in any boards or
cables/plugs or anything else that's easy to disconnect and reconnect in
it. That can knock corrosion off of connector surfaces sometimes and
re-establish the connection. Of course, that won't help if it's relay
contacts.
If you can get to the relay contacts directly they can be cleaned by
pulling a piece of paper through the contacts a few times while holding
the contacts closed.
