Hi John. I have a MKIIG I purchased new in Tokyo in 2000. It has never had any issues, but I have never used it in a marathon, either.
Some Icoms seem to have issues with static. I have an original 756PRO that died last year due to a lightning strike nearby. All antennas were disconnected and grounded. The spike came in through the AC line and came into the PRO through the ACC connectors in the rear of the radio.
The transmitter was inop, but the rcv was fine..... LOTS of other things in the shack and house were damaged as well. That's what happens when you live close to the "lightning capital of the USA"... ha ha

I can't see why the finals should ever go out except in extreme cases of
operator error.

The older MKIIG's with hard to get finals seem to have gone down in value
somewhat. At the price I paid I'm not to worried about replacing the
finals if they go, and I figure the control head, separation cable and
microphone would have some residual value. The radios in question are
probably now at least 8 years old. (The ICOM 706MKIIG I received new in
2005 apparently has the new style finals so I assume the ones with the older
finals are unlikely to have been made before 2005.)

I'd expect to pay more for a late production unit with the newer finals.

I also feel the issue of the older finals has been somewhat blown out of
proportion on the "internet." I have my doubts about the availability of
parts for other radios of similar vintage.

I hope this info is helpful re a value for the original 706.
