the encoder in the 761 is the same as the 765 I know cause I have a 765
there enter changeable you need to remove the rubber grip on the knob then
there is an allen screw that allow you to take the knob off, next first
turn the radio upside down right in the middle of the knob back about an
inch theres a hole to adjust the tension of spin this is all this screw does
it’s a phillips head screw this slows the knob spin tension you could have
turned this to tight that will stop it from turning.

Well guys.....I seem to have done it now :(
I was able to easily remove the knob set screw and remove the knob twice
before. Now I've completely removed the set screw, but the knob seems
frozen on the shaft. Without the set screw, the knob seems to free-wheel
on the shaft, but it won't slide off.
I'm afraid to pull on it too hard for fear it'll break the encoder. Any
ideas?
Thanks,
Phil

A bit of extra info. When I tighten the knob set screw back onto the
shaft and rotate the knob, the frequency no longer changes. Something
inside the encoder must be displaced or no longer rotating.
Sure wish I had just left the knob off.
