Hi Bob,On ICOMs, the Transmit switch acts just like PTT on SSB or QSK (with a hold) on CW.
It switches the rig into transmit mode, but it does not invoke modulation of any kind: so in SSB, you can switch it into transmit, but it won't actually transmit anything until you speak (just like PTT). Any mode with a suppressed carrier (such as SSB or unkeyed CW) will result in zero output without either speaking or keying the CW.
If you want to use the transmit switch to, for example, check SWR, switch it to a carrier mode (I use RTTY) and it will transmit when you switch it in.
The good news is there's nothing wrong with your radio: it's supposed to do that.
