Hello Patrick,

Even if you own a CT-17 is a easier to use USB> Serial adapter like this one
and connect directly to the transceivers CI-V Port.
http://www.ebay.de/itm/USB-to-TTL-Converter-Arduino-Atmega-Robots-/130969635741
Prevered are chipsets from Silicon Labs or FTDI.
Stay away from the Prolific Chipsets, mostley no WIN8 drivers avalable.

If you like to modify your CT-17 with the mentioned USB>Serial adapter, take
a look at this file.
http://www.die-jetzis.de/cb/tmp/ICOM CT-17 USB Support.pdf
The file will be online for 1 week.

So the question is, can a USB cable be canabalized to segregate the data
lines from the power lines, solder a 3.5 mm plug to the data lines and be
able to make a direct connection from the PC USB port to the remote jack on
the IC-718?

Patrick: The remote input on most Icom radios is a CI-V input, 3rd party
adapters for which are very inexpensive. Some for less than $10 including
the drivers. Try a CI-V adapter input on E-Bay and look at the offerings.

Larry,

Appreciate your answer. I have a CT-17. The laptop only has USB ports. I
plugged a USB to serial converter into the USB port, then the 9 pin to 25
pin cable from the converter to the CT-17, then cabling from the CT-17 to
the IC-718.

I get no communication to the radio, and not so certain any communication
with the CT-17. I read that communication directly with the CT-17 may be
achieved using hyperterminal. I tried that route with no luck, either.

I am slowly narrowing down the options trying to figure out if the converter
is not working properly with the CT-17 or if the CT-17 is faulty. I am
guessing it is more human error than anything else.

Any thoughts?

Not sure what you are running as an operating system on your laptop. I
am running XP here on my tower and laptop systems. I have simple 8 - 10
dollar USB to serial converters to work fine. CT-17 has a specific
protocol that it needs which includes the address. You can use programs
such as CHIRP, HRD, and an ICOM specific called Commander. They all work
for me on my IC2100, IC2200 and IC-910.

I doubt if Hyperterminal will work since the it assumes plain text.
Also, if you are using XP on a laptop, a different com port will come up
for each different USB port that you use. Be sure you check the
"Devices" under control panel and find out which com port became active.

I would at least loop the USB adapter (Serial side pin 2 to 3) and make
sure it echos what you type. At least you'll know that your
communications are working to that point.

Hope that this helps.

If you're running Win7 and your USB to serial adapter is a Prolific chip,
the OS may not recognize it. I had to switch to an FTDI chip USB CI-V
converter.
