[ICOM] Icom 7000 phenomenon

A couple of years ago I had a chance to use an Icom 7000 for a little while, and I experienced something I really haven't seen with another rig, wonder if anyone has had a similar problem with a 7000. I had it set up for 40 meters like I would run any other rig-preamp off, and filter set to 500hz. I was playing around with the bandscope and saw lots of blimps up the band, so I tuned up there. It was a Thursday night, and I realized that the NCCC sprint was going on, so I figured it was a good chance to try out the 7000.
What I heard next was very unsettling. The rig seemed to be full of IMD products! Most of the signals were next to uncopyable with the amount of junk being generated by the receiver. Anyone else have an experience with this? Did I have something set wrong? I don't think I still had the bandscope on in the slow mode where it does almost realtime but cuts up the audio.
